Dating rumours

In 2018, South Korean daily newspaper Ilgan Sports broke the news that Son and his fellow Sense8 co-star Bae Doona were dating. The report claimed their relationship deepened when Bae gave acting tips to the actor. Son would often visit the Dongbinggo-dong district in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, where Bae lives. Both denied the rumours.

Last year, media outlet Osen reported that Son and actress Lee Seol were dating. Both of their respective agencies dismissed the rumours, according to Soompi.

He was “unusually” shy

According to Soompi, in an episode of variety show My Little Old Boy last year, Son revealed that his parents sent him to Canada to study abroad and to overcome his shyness.

His shyness was so severe that he felt like it was an illness. Son recalled that he had a sheltered childhood and would go straight home after school. When his parents once took him to a department store, he couldn’t utter a word until he got back home.

He finds it difficult to date

During the variety show episode, Son also brought up how difficult it is to date. When he was in Canada, he decided to bring his ex-girlfriend to an island restaurant on Valentine’s Day and took a boat to get there. But by the time they arrived, the island was dark, so they had to leave. In order to prevent similar situations, he now tries to plan his dates in advance.

He originally wanted to become a documentary director – and was a CEO

According to Zapzee, before he became an actor, Son initially wanted to become a documentary director. He majored in film and art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

After graduating, he returned to Korea and became the CEO of GOMT, a machine tool manufacturing company. It was reported that the company earned US$4.6 million in profit in 2016, according to AllKpop. His agency SBD Entertainment clarified that he stepped away from management duties to concentrate on acting.

He considers his roles to be a manifestation of himself

In an interview with Korea Joongang Daily, Son said his characters are a part of him and a manifestation of himself. He explained that his character’s slyness in D.P, where he portrayed a military captain, represented his own slyness.

In Nothing Serious, he could relate to his role as a magazine columnist because his character, Woo-ri, led an ordinary life, which he considers not dissimilar to his own.
